Luxor is the site of the ancient Egyptian capital of Thebes. Not much of the original buildings can be seen as they were all made of mud brick, including the palaces of the pharoahs. But the glory of Luxor are its two major temples, Karnak and Luxor, built in stone to ensure immortality.

A welcoming sign in the Valley of the Kings!

"Welcome to Alaska!" the taxi driver said. With the temperature close to 100, the irony was not lost. Luxor was our base and we stayed at the Luxor Hilton, which is a Nile side hotel. After a 5 hour flight in the most cramped conditions I'd ever flown in, it was good to stretch a little. We had taken a Thompson Holidays package holiday, on economic grounds, as the flight plus the hotel was only a little more than the cheapest flight I could find at the time. The hotel is spacious, luxurious and friendly, and is definitely to be recommended.
